Notes for Elizabeth Vaugh
Elizabeth was not raised a Catholic, but became one after a son (Mary's twin) was stillborn [Margaret Pickles].
Elizabeth always said that she came from Sligo [ibid]. Was this the town or the county? Sligo is the county town of county Sligo, in the province of Connaught (Connacht) in Ireland. The neighbouring province of Sligo (the county border is about 5 miles to the east of Sligo town) is also in Connaught.

Peter Murray thinks she remained protestant until late in life.

Notes from Elizabeth Wilson, received 7 Sep 2007:
---
Elizabeth's immigration details call her Eliza - she was single and 20 years of age. Her occupation was domestic servant - religion Protestant and she was able to read and write. Her place of origin was Leitrim, Ireland. She came out on the "Jumna" which departed London on 25 August 1888 and arrived Brisbane 13 October 1888. She disembarked in Brisbane.
Shipping records do not indicate that she travelled with anyone from either her family or County. At the time of departure, there were many advertisements for domestic help in Australia, stressing the strong ratio of males to females - about 3 to 1. Most of the 295 females on board the "Jumna" were single and aged between 15 and 30 and most said they were domestic servants.
On arrival in Australia she was protestant however she turned Catholic in 1902 when her daughter Mary was baptized in Fremantle.
Nothing is then known of her until her marriage.
After her husband died, grandson Jim Murray said she lived with his mother and her daughter Katie.

She smoked a clay pipe.

Her grandchildren can remember her having a brother George who was suppose to have lived in New Zealand.

It appears that Elizabeth Wilson has identified Elizabeth Vaugh with one particular birth record reported on "The VAUGH pages"
http://vaugh.co.uk/genindexs/GRO_Birth_Index_for_Ireland.htm

YEAR | QTR | SURNAME | NAME | OTHER NAME | Date of Birth | SEX | Mother | Father | Registration District | VOL | PAGE | DOC | ENTRY

1866 | | VAUGH | FEMALE | | 14 JUN 1866 | | CATHERINE IRWIN | PETER CARRICK ON SHANNON | 8 | 93 | B51 |

If this identification is correct, then Elizabeth Vaugh had a younger brother:
