Notes for James Edward Godkin
Notes from Elizabeth Wilson, received 7 Sep 2007:
---
James lived in Ireland and with his family moved to England where the family lived in Surrey when the 1881 census was done. He came to Australia on "Belgravia" arriving Sydney on 2.5.1884. This boat sailed from Plymouth. He paid 4 pound for passage.
In 1884 he was a warehouseman - 1897 storeman - 1898 traveller - 1899 storekeeper - 1902 time keeper - 1904 shipping clerk - 1906 time keeper and in 1922 a bookkeeper.
He and Elizabeth were married in Murwillumbah and the sailed to Freemantle Western Australia, where they lived from 1898 to 1905. Their four daughters were all born there.

A puzzle at the moment - religion - it appears James' parents were married in a Church of England church and James was baptized Church of England, however his immigration records state that he was a catholic - he married in the Catholic Church and his wife became a Catholic when the children were baptized catholics.

It is also a puzzle as to why he and his wife travelled to Freemantle after their marriage. The Vaugh family had relatives in Perth and there is also a line of Godkins in Perth but I have never heard anyone in our family speak of them.
