JAP says of Elizabeth Ann Gill "she made it tough for her two stepchildren. They both left home as soon as they could. Her stepson was lost to the family. Her stepdaughter Eva, who had been born 1874, married Tom Paley." So James presumably had another son by his first wife.

His marriage certificate (to Elizabeth Ann Gill, Settle, 20 Oct, 1879) is intriguing. He is now a 30yo widower and she is a 22yo spinster. He is the son of _John_ Russell, farmer. She is living at Skipton-in-Craven at time of marriage. She is the daughter of Christopher Gill, deceased. The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Briggs (her stepfather) and Emma Jane Gill (her sister).

The birthdate of 21 Oct 1849 (from JAP) might be wrong. www.redmire.net has a baptism date of 7 Jan 1849. The 1851 census has him as 2yo (which at face value would mean that he must have been born before 30 Mar 1849). The only entry in FreeBMD (Births) for James Russell 1849+/-1 registered in Leyburn is 1848 Dec Leyburn 24 446. I am temporarily [i.e. until I order the certificate] going with 21 Oct 1848, trusting the family to have his birthday right, if not his birth year.
