I can only find one Alfred Hessom in the region of the right age. He appears at age 7 in the 1881 census in Birkenhead, for estimated birth year 1874, and there is a matching entry for Alfred James Hessom in FreeBMD births. The connection back to father Thomas (a baker) was originally made via the 1871 census record. The birth certificate of Alfred James Hessom [GRO ref: 1874 Mar Birkenhead 8a 486] gives his birth date (23 Jan 1874) and parents, Thomas (baker) and Emily Kegg.
The information that confirms all this is the re-marriage of Emily Hessom to William Coop Ramsden; the 1891 census (which has William, Emily, Alfred and Emily Thomasina together); and the 1901 census (Emily Ramsden is living at the same address as Alfred and new wife Emily).
