The Raynolds-Jack marriage certificate has arrived.

Marriage solemnized at The Church in the Parish of St Simons Liverpool....
When: July 13 1872
Names: John Raynolds, Emma Jack
Ages: Full, Full
Condition: Bachelor, Spinster
Rank: Railway Guard, -
Residences: St Simons, St Simons
Father: James Rynolds (or something like that), Alexander Jack
Father's rank: Schoolmaster, Cabinetmaker
after Banns

Signed: John (something illegible that looks like Rynoldd), Emma Jack her mark
Witnesses: Mary Tillson her mark, Emma Crispe

I think this is a hit.

John's occupation matches the father's occupation on the birth certificate of Margaret (1872).

Emma's father is Alexander Jack, cabinet maker. So Emma is almost certainly our Emily. But she was lying about her age. Forgiveable, because she was about three months pregnant.

I'm still confused about John Reynolds Chapman. He seems to have used both names as if they were surnames. I don't know whether Reynolds is his father's name, mother's name, stepfather's name or perhaps just a family name from earlier generations.

His father could either be James Reynolds or James Chapman. The vicar could have supplied the father's surname.

I have managed to find an 1871 census record for John Reynolds, Railway goods guard, boarding in Wigan, age 23. The age fits, but it says he was born in Ireland. I guess a railway worker would have been fairly mobile for the times, and might have been able to get into Liverpool fairly regularly.

I came across a census record for a James Reynolds, School Master, born England, living in Ayr (Scotland). Forget which year. Seemed unlikely.

I also found a James Chapman, b. abt 1811, Liskeard, Widower, Schoolmaster, in the 1851 census for Liskeard, living with four
children, E. J. (11, born Liverpool!), James Ivy (!) (8, b. Liskeard), Emmeline (6, b. Liskeard) and A. H. (3, b. Stonehouse?, Devon). This looks promising, but we'd still have to explain where John Reynolds Chapman was on census night 1851.
