Notes for Mary Clarke
Year of birth 1806 inferred from 1841 census. Could be as early as June 1801. Later censuses fix it closer to 1803.

A couple of years after the death of Mary Heesom's father William Heesham on 1 Jan 1846, her widow Mary Hesham formerly Clarke married a younger man William Clare at Warrington St Paul's in 1848. This is confirmed by 1849 probate records (filed under William Heesom at Cheshire record office), which mention Mary Clare as William Hessom's widow and relict, and William Clare as her husband.

In the 1881 census, we can find in one household (Little Shepcroft Farm, Appleton), Peter and Mary Clare, their youngest sons Thomas and Harry, along with Peter's elder brother William and his wife Mary.

The ages and places of birth of this William and Mary match (closely enough) the details given by William and Mary in the 1851 census (when Mary's youngest son John Heesom was still living with them), as well as the 1861 and 1871 censuses, so we can be confident it's the same couple.

So the elder Mary at Little Shepcroft Farm in 1881 was Peter's sister-in-law AND mother-in-law! She married her son-in-law's elder brother!
