Notes for William Pickles
Lock-keeper at Gargrave via Skipton.

His life revolved around the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Born in Barnoldswick parish. In 1841, William was a labourer in Salterforth, in the parish of Barnoldswick. Salterforth is a pretty little village on the canal. William was living in White House, which is some distance uphill from the village of Salterforth, and very close to the Yorkshire-Lancashire border.

Less than a mile from White House, near the village of Foulridge, in Lancashire, is Hey Fold (or Fould), where his wife to be, Mary Blackburn, lived with her mother Sarah and step-father Richard Robinson. William and Mary's sons Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were born in Foulridge.

By 1851, they had moved along the canal to Lock House, Gargrave, where he became a bank-ranger and lock keeper.

Their eldest son Matthew move to Liverpool, at the western end of the canal.

Mark moved eastwards along the canal to Shipley.
