Is there one Alice or two? The ages from the 1871 and 1881 censuses are not consistent. The Alice who was 11 in the 1881 census, should already have been alive at the 1871 census, which makes the case for two Alices, one of whom died, less likely.

An alternative explanation is that George Lawton, who would have been 3 in the 1871 but was not listed in the return, was confounded with Alice by the enumerator.
