Notes for Hilton Liptrot
Hilton Liptrot is not mentioned amongst the "five children" in the memoires of Robert Charles Hilton Liptrot ("Tony"). The transcription of "Kelton Liptrot" for the 1901 census would appear to be incorrect. Some confidence in the reading "Hilton" can be had from Tony's own given names, and further confirmation from the register of births for W. Derby (1897 Jun 8b 608).
Olga thinks that Hilton "shot himself". Not known whether this was intentional or accidental.
Anyway, Hilton Liptrot can be found in the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920, which gives his regiment (Liverpool Regiment) and number (2979). The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has Rifleman H Liptrot, no. 2979, 5th battallion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) who died on 20 July 1916, remembered with honour at the Merville Communal Cemetery, France.
FindMyPast (Soldiers Died in the Great War database (c) Naval and Military Press Ltd 2006.) says also that he "Died of wounds".
"Merville is a town 15 kilometres north of Bethune and about 20 kilometres south-west of Armentieres. The Communal Cemetery is on the north-east side of the town to the north of the D38 road to Neuf-Berquin." [CWGC]
