Notes for Robert Leslie Liptrot
Robert Leslie Liptrot is listed in Births 1895 Sep 8b 626 W. Derby, son of Robert Liptrot and Mary Liptrot formerly Weaver. Place of birth is 73 Clifton Road East, West Derby. Note that Joseph Hessom and family also lived at Clifton Road - a coincidence?
1901 census entry for 16 Goth Street, West Derby
[address appears to be unmistakable, yet I can't find a Goth Street in 2007] has:
Robert Liptrot, Head, 29, General Laborer, born Liverpool, Lancs.
Mary Liptrot, Wife, 30, , West Derby, Liverpool.
Robert L Liptrot, Son, 5, , West Derby, Liverpool.
Hilton Liptrot, Son, 3, , West Derby, Liverpool.
Stanley Liptrot, Son, 8 months, West Derby, Liverpool.
Martha Weaver, Mother-in-Law, 62, West Derby, Liverpool.
[Roddy:] Went to sea with Merchant Navy as a steward. On his return, joined the police force (during a strike when they were taking anyone). Later, worked for the electricity board emptying meters. During WWII, worked in the English Electricity factory. After war, opened (or re-opened?) "Liptrot's Detective Agency". Then worked as a doorman at a club, an unfortunate occupation for an alcoholic.
[Tony:] "By this time [abt 1928] my father had left the police force and was working on a steward on Ocean liners."
"About 1931 my father had finished with life at sea and had opened his own office and business in the centre of Liverpool. He traded as Liptrot's Detective Agency. After a few years the business went from strength to strength and he had a car and driver (he couldn't drive) and four other employees."
[Olga and Roddy] Thought to have lived in Bulwer Street, off Breck Road. 4-5 bedroom house with two downstairs parlours.
He served in the Liverpool Regiment in WW1, as a private (regimental number 1771), and later as a corporal (regimental number 330213). Source: Ancestry.com.
